State of Small Business Technology

Technology is transforming how small businesses operate and many are finding it difficult to keep up. I believe the average small business is still operating with an outdated mindset as it relates to technology and what it can do for the organization. Small Businesses are missing many opportunities to lower cost and save time. Every area and aspect of the organization is changing and in my humble opinion, it’s changing for the better.  With these new advances in technology, businesses are better position to move forward faster.

Many small business owners are too busy working on their company that they have not taken the time to consider what the new tools in tech can provide. Most would probably say, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Well that mindset can end up costing you several thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars. But, with the right help, you can lower the cost of what you are currently spending and upgrade your infrastructure at the same time. Start now by conducting an assessment of the state of your technology, telecom and business processes. The following are just a few areas to consider reviewing in your  business that can save you $$ and time:

Network Connection. How do you connect your organization to the Internet? Many small businesses are still operating off the old assumptions that you need a T1 in order to get Internet access. I don’t know if that is true for your organization but I highly recommend reviewing your contract and getting advice to see if it is still required. There are many options available today.

Cloud Computing. This many not be for every small business but it has been proven that cloud solutions provide flexible storage, zero capital investment, inexpensive to run, always up to day and very easy to maintain. There are security concerns but with the right design and implementation, the cloud could save you a significant amount of money.

Paperless Office. This is probably the most controversial of all. There are a differencing of option as it relates to going paperless. Paperless is possible but it does require effort. I suggest conducting a cost analysis to determine if paperless would save you time and money.

There are many more options where technology is disrupting business processes and if you will embrace them, you will find that your organization will be able to move forward faster and ahead of the competition.
